Ingredients:
- 6-7 medium Granny Smith apples, sliced 1/4 inch thick (approx. 3 lbs)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Note: Make sure the oven is fully preheated so the butter in the topping doesn't melt before it sets.
- Slice your 6-7 Granny Smith apples into 1/4 inch thick wedges.
- In your large bowl, toss the apple slices with 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tbsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp lemon juice, and 1/4 tsp salt.
- Transfer the apple mixture into the 9x13-inch baking dish and spread them out evenly. Ensure they aren't all clumped in the center.
- In a separate mixing bowl, stir together 1 cup oats, 1 cup flour, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp salt.
- Add the 1/2 cup chilled, cubed butter to the dry mixture.
- Use a pastry cutter or forks to work the butter in until the mixture looks like coarse, pea sized crumbs. Note: Don't overwork it into a paste or you'll lose the crunch.
- Scatter the topping evenly over the apples, patting it down gently with your hand.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes until the fruit filling is bubbling around the edges and the top is a deep mahogany gold.
